10 Ways to Support a Loved One Struggling with Mental Health

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

  1. Listen without judgment: Listen without criticizing or giving advice. Ask them what would feel most helpful before you offer solutions.

  2. Validate their feelings: Let them know it's okay to feel what they are feeling and that you are there to listen.

  3. Encourage professional help: Suggest seeing a therapist or counselor if they haven't already. Offer to help them find therapists online and read through their bios together to see who might be a good fit.

  4. Respect their boundaries: Understand that they may not always want to talk or engage, and that's okay. Let them know you're available whenever they're ready.

  5. Educate yourself: Learn about their specific condition or mental health issue to better understand what they are going through.

  6. Follow up: Check in with them regularly to see how they're doing. Knowing that someone cares can make a big difference.

  7. Take care of yourself: Supporting someone with mental health issues can be emotionally draining. Make sure to prioritize your own well-being and seek support if you need it.
